The park is located along the Navasota River where the grasses of the Blackland Prairie mingle with the woodlands of the Post Oak Savannah. Look for springs bubbling along the Springfield Trail. Three-acre Springfield Lake is spring-fed.

Wildlife frequently seen in the park includes bluebirds, ducks, herons, migratory waterfowl, bald eagles, owls, coyotes, raccoons, squirrels and bobcats.

There is an active great blue heron rookery on Fort Parker Lake. Look for it from the wildlife viewing area on the Bur Oak Nature Trail.

Popular fish include crappie, bass, catfish and trout (in season). Keep an eye out for other aquatic wildlife in the lake or river such as river otters, beavers and nutria.
