<p>The hike begins
with great views from within the canyons, and challenges to get your heart
pumping for a hike of 1.5 - 2.5 hours, and about 2.6—4 miles
long.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the end of this trail we'll provide the option to finish
with a short&nbsp;distance back to the starting point. Or, for those yearning
for more, we'll&nbsp;split up and take that group around to the Upper
Sunset&nbsp;Trail to&nbsp;finish strong, burn some extra calories, and
jumpstart those New Year's Resolutions. Bring a day pack, water, hiking shoes,
hiking stick, and snacks. &nbsp;Meet at&nbsp;<span class="Apple-style-span">Tom Mays Unit -&nbsp;</span><span class="Apple-style-span">Schaeffer's Shuffle Trail.</span></p>

<p><span>This is going to be a great opportunity for females of all ages who may feel some apprehension or fear about starting this new activity.&nbsp;&nbsp;She will learn all of the fundamentals of hiking, taking a slower pace, starting with beginner level trails, and have an experienced guide along for the entire hike to lead them, assist, and answer any questions.&nbsp; The support that comes from having an all women&rsquo;s hike is unmatched; you&rsquo;ll be surrounded by fellow first time female hikers all trying something new, and the comfortable environment created from setting up a newbies hike like this can really allow each woman to take the experience at her own pace, enjoy the learning process, and ease her into the fantastic world of hiking!</span></p>

    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p><span>Water - the essence of life; for those of us humans and wildlife that live in a desert, this rings loud and true.&nbsp;This Friday (August 24)&nbsp;kids will get their version of the Water Conservation education programming the park is offering this month.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span><span>Come out for a special evening program in McKelligon Canyon: Guest Speaker Norma Guzman from TecH20 will be joining us Friday evening providing a presentation on the present water situation in El Paso; following the presentation, we'll be showing "Rango".&nbsp; Get a free low-flow shower head, and then let us know --- What is your pledge?&nbsp; We'll provide you a pledge card and we&rsquo;d like to know what you are going to do to help conserve water.&nbsp; At the end of the month, we&rsquo;ll take all of the pledges and share them on our facebook page to show what El Pasoans are doing to make a difference!&nbsp; </span>Families&nbsp;will also receive&nbsp;a reading list for kids'&nbsp;books on water conservation.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p>EL PASO, Texas &ndash; Park rangers and volunteers invite you to join us on Saturday, September 1, 2012 for the 5th Annual Chihuahuan Desert Chili Challenge held at the Tom Mays Unit of the Franklin Mountains State Park.<span>&nbsp;</span> Come out for a fun-filled afternoon of free chili tasting, music, door prizes and more; event is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with free chili tasting to start at 1:00 p.m.<span>&nbsp;</span> Music will be provided by Slackabilly.<span>&nbsp;</span> Entrance fee is $5.00 per adult 13 years or older, children 12 and under have free entrance &ndash; park pass holders and their car passengers get free entrance.<span>&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>This Chili Cook Off is Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) sanctioned.<span>&nbsp;</span> &ldquo;CASI raises money for charity through the promotion of American red chili. CASI sanctions over 500 chili cook offs internationally each year as qualifying events for the Terlingua International Chili Championship. This grand spectacle is held the first Saturday of November each year at the society&rsquo;s grounds in Terlingua, Texas.&rdquo;<span>&nbsp;</span> --<span>&nbsp;</span> <a href="http://www.chili.org/">www.chili.org</a>.</p>

<p><span>Schaeffer's Shuffle takes a hiker deep&nbsp;into the canyon and arroyo for a pleasant excursion - an escape from the city sounds, yet within the city limits, this hike is great to get the feeling that you are fully removed from civilization.&nbsp; Learn about the history of the uses of the land and the Franklin Mountains such as ranching, tin mining, and as a&nbsp;pathway to distant destinations.</span></p>

    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p>Sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife and Franklin Mountains State Park, everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the day and explore the area with park staff, volunteers and members of the Chihuahuan Desert Education Coalition including the El Paso Zoo, El Paso Parks Department, El Paso Water Utilities, Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition and many other local organizations. There will be short easy walking guided walks, speakers, educational exhibits, horse and hay rides and demonstrations.</p>
<p>Cost:&nbsp; Regular entrance fee to the park of $5.00.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Texas Park Pass holders receive free entrance in to all Texas State Parks, so this event is free to TSPP holders.</p>

<p><strong>Length:</strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; 3-4 miles/ 2.5 &ndash; 3 hours</p>
<p><i><strong>*Difficulty Level:</strong>&nbsp; Strenuous.&nbsp; From the trailhead we will venture into the canyon on a well maintained section of trail; once we reach the incline, the trail becomes increasingly steep, with trail becoming more rugged in sections.&nbsp; This hike will conclude above the &ldquo;Mammoth&rdquo; or about 1.5 to 2 miles down the trail, then we will return using the same route (the entire stretch of the Ron Coleman Trail is about 3.8 miles one way). </i></p>

<p><span><strong>Discussion/Topic:<span>&nbsp;</span></strong> Learn about the fascinating world of Archaeology straight from the archaeologists themselves!<span>&nbsp;</span> They will discuss a variety of instruments and tools used to &ldquo;unveil&rdquo; conspicuous rock art such as XRF, Image J and Dstretch. <span>&nbsp;</span>The panel of archaeologists will hold a Q&amp;A for guests so you can ask them anything you&rsquo;ve ever wanted to ask an archaeologist and powerpoint presentations will be shown to bring you deeper understanding and awareness of the type of work they do.<span>&nbsp;</span> You can also <em>experience</em> archaeology with the hands on activities and displays that they will bring to the program.<span>&nbsp;</span> Coffee, hot cocoa and pastries will be provided &ndash; so pull up a chair and join us for a great evening!</span></p>]]></content:encoded>

Moses former General Superintendent of El Paso Texas State Parks, for a guided hike into Franklin Mountains State Park &ndash; Anthony&rsquo;s Cave on October 27<sup>th</sup>, 2012.</p>
<p align="center">30 year career in international mining and petroleum and 11 years at TPWD</p>
<p align="center">&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&mdash;&nbsp;</p>

<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Location:&nbsp; 404 hwy &ndash; A ranger will leave the Tom Mays Unit entrance at 8:00 a.m. if you would like to follow (meet at the pay booth at 8:00 a.m.)</p>
<ul>
<li>Directions to trailhead:&nbsp; From Tom Mays Unit entrance, travel 3.8 miles west towards I-10; take I-10 North (towards New Mexico) about 8 miles and take exit 162.&nbsp; From exit 162 travel East (turn rt.) on Hwy 404 about 4 miles to the gate entrance on the right hand side &ndash; look for orange flagging on the gate. </li>
</ul>
<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Length:&nbsp; 2.5 miles total / 3.5 hours</p>
<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>*Difficulty Level: </em><em>&nbsp;The hike to the cave is short but strenuous.&nbsp; We will be traversing over loose rock in sections, then trek up the side of Anthony&rsquo;s Nose Mtn. side on an undefined trail to the opening of Anthony&rsquo;s Cave.</em></p>
<p><em>&nbsp;</em></p>
<p><span>IMPORTANT</span>-&nbsp; Bring:&nbsp; Water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, camera, binoculars, good head covering or helmet, 2 working hands-free light sources, gloves, trash bag (for the muddy cave clothes) and change of clothes for the drive home.</p>
