The park was damaged by Hurricane Ike. Beach side and bay side camping areas and the beach side day use area are open. 

Due to construction of a new restroom and shower facility in the bay side camping loop, construction noises can be expected between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November.

The park offers camping, bird watching, nature study, hiking, mountain biking, fishing and unsupervised beach swimming.

Equipment Rentals

This park participates in the Angler Education “Tackle Loaner Program”; individuals can borrow rods, reels and tackle boxes with hooks, sinkers and bobbers.

Ranger Programs

Educational tours of the flora and fauna of the beach and bay areas of the park are given by appointment only. Contact the park to make arrangements.

Nearby attractions in Galveston include Moody Gardens (with the Rainforest Pyramid, I-Max Theater and Palm Beach); numerous historical homes; the Railroad Museum; the Strand Historical District, where the Tall Ship Elissa (an 1877 sailing vessel) is moored; the Seaport Museum; and the Galveston County Museum. Space Center Houston is also nearby, as are the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site, San Jacinto Monument and Battleship TEXASBrazos Bend State ParkVarner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site and Brazoria County Access Point (San Luis County Park operated by Brazoria County) are within two hours.
