First Day Hikes

Join park staff to walk the Island and the woods of one of Texas’ most popular winter spots. For sturdier souls, there will even be a trek to the famous Big Tree. Three hikes, ranging from 1.5 mi., 2.5 mi. and 4 miles will be offered. All the way to the Big Tree and back will actually be 8 miles, with a chance to see the Lamar flock of Whooping Cranes!. Hike is free to campers or with a State Park Pass. Otherwise, park entrance fees will apply to adults ages 13 and older. All hikes are beginner to intermediate in nature, and cover flat terrain. Hikers should wear sturdy walking shoes or boots, bring water and a hiking stick. There will be several opportunities for restroom breaks along the way. Binoculars are optional. Hikers meet at the park’s Recreation Hall.

Cranes, Whooping Cranes and Operation Migration Program

Peter Vander Sar leads the program. Join Peter as he shares information on the intense efforts to increase the population of this federally endangered species. Meet at the Rec Hall at 7 PM Friday, February 24, 2012.

Oyster Reef Restoration Volunteer Event

Dr. Jennifer Pollack or a designee will lead the event. Join us as we prepare oyster bags for use in building new oyster reefs in the area. The events will be held at the fishing pier parking area and the events will start at 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

Please wear closed-toe shoes (old tennis shoes are perfect) and clothes that can get wet/dirty. If you have gardening-type gloves, bring those as well. We hope to see you there!

Habitat Hike

Join us at Goose Island State Park and discover why coastal woodlands are such important habitats, for wildlife, plants, and people. This event is for everyone! Children, please bring your favorite adults with you! Moderate, ~ 1.3 mile hike, with interactive activities along the trail. We will meet at the North Turk’s Cap Trail Parking Area. Bring water, good walking shoes and bug spray (if needed).

Families can learn the basics of fishing through fun, hands-on activities. Take away a fishing fun pack and enter the drawing for prizes. Equipment and bait provided or bring your own. No license necessary. Adults must accompany children. Bring sun protection and water. Registration start time is 9:00 A.M.

Join us at Goose Island State Park, 202 S. Palmetto St. – Lamar, Rockport, TX 78382 for a nature hike in the coastal woodlands. This event is for everyone! Moderate, .66 to 1.3 mile hike, We will meet at the North Turk’s Cap Trail Parking Area. Bring water, good walking shoes and bug spray (if needed). Park entrance fees apply; Adults $5.00 per person; Seniors $3.00 per person; Children 12 years of age and under are free entry.

Hooray For Habitat Celebration of The Big Tree Unit

Come join us for an all-day event to celebrate Texas Parks & Wildlife Department's acquisition of the 80-acre Big Tree Unit - Goose Island State Park with bird walks at 7:30 a.m., Interpretive programs at 9 a.m. & 12:30 p.m. Celebration Ceremony will be at 11:00 a.m. with State and local officials as featured speakers. The programs will cover a tour of the new property that will meet at the Big Tree parking lot; and the history of The Big Tree that will meet in front of the Big Tree. Both programs will be at the same times so visitors will have a chance to attend both programs.
