Junior Rangers:  PEAK Program “Promoting environmental awareness in kids” to leave no Trace

  • Building Base Camp: Families come together, gather equipment and build base camp for the weekend.
  • Caching in on State Park Trails: Trail adventure and exploration of Penn Farm through GPS and Geo-caching
  • Fire Building and Outdoor Cooking Tips: How to safely build fires and cook on open flames / grills (conditions permitting)
  • Experience the natural wonders at night: Celebrating nature’s natural night noises at State Parks


Sunday

  • Coffee and chat with a Park Ranger: Q&A – Learn more about parks and conservation
  • Know Before You Go ... Breaking Camp and Leaving no Trace of your stay

 

Additonal Site Specific Activities

  • Kayaking: Learning a few basic strokes and putting them to practice in the lake!
  • Intro to Fishing: Learn the basics of safe casting and try your hand at catching a fish

 

 

Additional Curriculum

  • State Park Junior Ranger Certification Programs – Targeted Audience: 5-12 years of age
  • Environmentally-friendly program which adopts and teaches the 'Leave No Trace' philosophy and practices

]]> No publisher rowen Lake Livingston SP Texas Outdoor Family 2012-06-04T17:08:04Z Event The Great Backyard Bird Count http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/calendar/the-great-backyard-bird-count Join local birders at Lake Livingston State Park to help spot and record winter bird populations. Learn to use binoculars, spotting scopes, and field guides. All ages and experience levels welcome! The Great Backyard Bird Count is conducted in areas around the United States in order to obtain a real-time snapshot of winter bird populations.  Over the course of four days, volunteers record the species found in a specific area and the number of individuals seen. 

This annual event at Lake Livingston State Park is hosted by the Pineywoods Bird and Bloom Club and Pineywood-Lakes Texas Master Naturalists.  Their volunteers will be on hand at the Duck Pond Bird Blind between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to help identify birds, answer questions, and will lead afternoon discovery walks.  

 Binoculars, Bird Guides and a spotting scope will be available.  

 All ages and experience levels welcome, boardwalk is wheelchair accessible.   

 Park Admission fees apply, no additional charge for event participation.

Celebrate National Trails Day with a two-mile hike inside Lake Livingston State Park.  This hike will begin at the park Headquarters and includes portions of the Headquarters, Livingston, and McEwan & Moore trails. 

Restrooms are available at multiple locations along the hike. 

Participants should bring water and dress for the June weather: sunblock, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.  Leashed dogs are welcome to participate on this hike.
