Events http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us daily 1 2009-07-27T23:18:03Z First Day Hikes http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/calendar/first-day-hikes-39 Jump start the New Year with a beautiful walk to the water’s edge where you can catch a glimpse of shorebirds and feel the breeze off the lake. Hike is about one mile round trip and should last about an hour, as it winds through post oak savannah regions. Your park ranger guide will talk about the trees and wildlife that live in the area. Suggest hikers wear closed toe shoes and bring a hiking stick and a bottle of water.  Hikers meet at day-use restroom area.

This 2 night event will provde you with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, relax with your family, and try your hand at Dutch Oven cooking. We will provide you with your own Dutch Oven and a list of recipes for trying.

Friday

  • Credible Campers & Campsites:

Adults: Learn Leave no Trace principles, how to pitch your tent and use stoves safely
Junior Rangers:  PEAK Program “Promoting environmental awareness in kids” to leave no trace

  • Building Base Camp: Families come together, gather equipment and build base camp for the weekend.
 

Saturday

  • Coffee and chat with a Park Ranger
  • Caching in on State Park Trails: Trail adventure and exploration through GPS and Geo-caching
  • Fire Building and Outdoor Cooking Tips: How to safely build fires and cook on open flames / grills
  • Experience the natural wonders at night: Celebrating nature’s natural night noises at  State Parks


Sunday

  • Coffee and chat with a Park Ranger: Q&A – Learn more about parks and conservation
  • Know Before You Go ... Breaking Camp and Leaving No Trace of your stay

 

Additonal Site Specific Activities

  • Creating Careful Kayakers: Introduction to Kayaking
  • Family Fishing Fun for Everyone: Introduction to Fishing
  • Dutch Oven Cooking: Using a cast iron pot and lid you'll be able to turn your campfire into a delicious oven
  • Nature hike: Enjoy the Hill Country from the heart of Lake Tawakoni State Park

 

Additional Curriculum

  • State Park Junior Ranger Certification Programs – Targeted Audience: 4-12 years of age
  • Environmentally-friendly program which adopts and teaches the 'Leave No Trace' philosophy and practices
  • Additional programs specifically for use and enjoyment of a state park

 

Meals

  • Instructors will teach you how to enjoy family camp cooking with a Dutch Oven.
  • Search the internet with the phrase "Dutch Oven Recipes" and you'll be amazed by the things you can make at camp!

 

Fees

  • $85 per family (up to 6 individuals) - includes all entry and camping fees.
  • You will be asked to bring your family's food for the two-day event and a suggested list of items is provided below in the "TOFPRE-materials."

  • Call 512-389-8903 and ask to speak to one of our "Texas Outdoor Family" customer service representatives Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. They can answer any questions you might have and also can provide the contact number for partner site workshops.
  • You will be e-mailed a confirmation packet with directions and additional items.
  • Please note that all reservations and full payment must be made at least four business days in advance of the workshops. All fees are non-refundable.
