Year with a First Day Hike at Lake Whitney
  State Park.&nbsp; On this easy, one-mile guided hike, you’ll
learn about the flora and fauna of the region as well as the role of the state
park and outdoor recreation in physical fitness and wellness. Participants may
want to bring hiking stick, sturdy shoes and drinking water. &nbsp;Meet at the&nbsp;trail head&nbsp;next to
the park’s Group Recreation Hall.</p>

    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p>Lake Whitney State Park will offer a guided nature hike on New Year&rsquo;s Day from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.&nbsp; Participants will meet at the trailhead next to the Recreation Hall.&nbsp; The hike will be Lake Whitney State Park&rsquo;s contribution to the nationwide <i>First Day Hikes</i> program.&nbsp; <i>First Day Hikes</i> brings awareness of healthy lifestyle alternatives that include state parks.&nbsp; This program is directed by the National Association of State Park Directors.&nbsp; The topics of the guided hike will include local flora and fauna, as well and a discussion of how state parks can contribute to physical fitness and wellness. &nbsp;The event is open to anyone with a valid state park entrance permit, which will be available at Park Headquarters.&nbsp; Please dress for the weather and wear footwear suitable for a one-mile hike.&nbsp; The event will be held at Lake Whitney State Park, 433 FM 1244, Whitney, TX 76692.&nbsp; RSVP through the Lake Whitney State Park Facebook fan site is optional.&nbsp;</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>This free workshop is open to anyone 18 or older interested in teaching the basics of fishing in their communities. The workshop provides the curriculum, equipment, materials and support to help volunteers succesfully introduce youth and their families to fishing. Ideal for teachers, youth group leaders, afterschool or camp staff. SBEC credit available for teachers. Participants should wear comfortable clothing for outdoor activities, wear hat, sunglasses and bring a sack lunch and a water bottle.&nbsp;&nbsp;Workshop is being held at the group recreation hall at Lake Whitney State Park form 9am to 2pm on February 28th with a short break for lunch.&nbsp; The $3 park entrance fee will be waived for anyone attending and completing the workshop.&nbsp; Preregistration is required, please contact Caleb Harris at caleb.harris@tpwd.state.tx.us or (512) 348-4472 to sign up.&nbsp;</p>
