At the State Park Gift Shop, the author of “The Evolution of Calpunia Tate” and “Return to the Willows”, Jacqueline Kelly and Illustrator Clint Young will be on hand signing books from 1p.m. to 3 p.m.

Experience the preparations from dyeing eggs produced by the hens in the barnyard, baking the traditional lamb cake, to making and sending friendship cards to those dear to your heart.

Easter at the Farm is special for all visitors, whether you are two or ninety-two. Enjoy the beginning of spring. The garden is beginning to come to life with the green leaves of the newly planted vegetables clearly visible row by row. Feel the rich warm earth between your fingers. Above the garden in one of the many Live Oak Trees you hear the sound of the Robins and the red birds. Out in the meadows children gather grass and native wildflowers to be used for making Easter nests. Each person in the household needed a nest in which to place the many colored eggs carefully gathered on Easter morning. In the kitchen Mama used beet juice, boiled onion skins and fresh spinach, boiled pecan peelings, grape juice and also bluing as ingredients to make the dyes to color the eggs. The smells of a special cake baked in the shape of a spring lamb drifts from the small wood burning stove. When the cake cools, a special icing is spread on the cake and topped with coconut to represent the wool and raisins make eyes. Bring the whole family to enjoy these sights and sounds of a wonderful Easter here at the park.

The Live Adult Pavilion usually holds from 12 - 30 or more adult butterflies of all shapes and sizes depending on the time of year. Monarchs are on hand when possible to bring the conservation message for these dwindling populations to the public. Children and adults are encouraged to interact with the butterflies, practice handling these delicate critters, learn to identify with a field guide and there is a release ceremony of the live adults at the end of the day.
