Mission San Francisco de las Tejas, Rice Family Log Home, & El Camino Real Tours

We will be giving free tours of the mission replica, the Rice Family Log Home, and El Camino Real at Mission Tejas State Park on June 2, 2012. Tours are scheduled for 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 4:00pm as part of Houston County’s 175^th birthday celebration. Groups should not exceed 20 persons per tour. Dress in comfortable clothing with footwear suitable for a walk in the woods. The tours will be held at Mission Tejas State Park, 120 State Park Road 44, Grapeland, Texas 75844. The buildings are wheelchair accessible. Park entrance fees for participants are waived.

Discovering and Preserving the Cultural Resources of East Texas

A day of activities and guest speakers highlighting the cultural history of Mission Tejas and East Texas including talks from Stephen F. Austin State University history professors, archivists, and local archaeologist. Famed Texas folklorist Ab Abernethy will also be in attendance. Geocaching 101

Visit Mission Tejas State Park and discover a new sport called Geocaching. You will use a GPS unit to find hidden treasure and learn how to play a game that can be played almost anywhere. It's great for kids and adults, no experience necessary. Visitors may bring their own GPS, but some will be provided.

Guided Hike: El Camino Real

Visit Mission Tejas State Park and walk in the footsteps of history. Learn about the historic road that helped give rise to Texas. Learn about its history, route, and natural features. See the path that shaped Texas History, and how the route is still a part of our lives. The hike will begin at 10am, and will meet at the Pavilion.

Owl Prowl

Visit Mission Tejas State Park and get a front row seat to wildlife viewing. Learn about the local owls and other creatures of the night. Visitors and a park ranger will use owl calls to lure owls and attempt to spot them. The event will start at the park pavilion.

Geocaching 101

Geocaching is a type of treasure hunt using a GPS unit to help find hidden “caches” placed by people all over the world. Geocaches are everywhere from just down the street to the most remote wilderness areas. This program will teach the basics of using a GPS for geocaching and how to get started Begins at 11 a.m. at the park pavilion. The program will start with a brief presentation, and then the search will begin. A limited number of GPS units are available for visitors. Visitors may also use their smartphone to geocache.

Junior Ranger Program

Kids and adults alike can discover what nature has in store this winter. We’ll look for wintering wildlife, learn about the different trees and plants, and hike around the park. And tour historic buildings. Participants that complete the program will be rewarded and declared Junior Rangers. Begins at 10 a.m. at the park headquarters. Bring comfortable shoes, water, and dress for the weather.

Campfire: Building a Fire and Campfire Talk- Nocturnal Wildlife
