First Day Hikes

It is a new year starting on the first day of the week, a time for new goals and habits. A time for paying attention to your health, reducing stress, and enjoying the outdoors. Join Park Ranger Marianne Van Houtte , as she will guide on the trails and explain the health benefits of walking. Fresh air and beautiful surroundings contribute to emotional health too, and play a part in reducing stress on the body. As a Boston Marathon finisher, Marianne can provide you information on running or jogging, as the trials are conducive for that as well. Nothing fancy is required; just a comfortable pair of shoes and a water bottle. There is no charge for the guided hike; however, park entrance fees do apply. Meet at park headquarters.

Earth Day 5K Trail Run/Fun Run

The Earth Day 5K Trail Run/Fun Run is hosted by the McGregor Class of 2012 with proceeds going towards Project Graduation. A one mile fun run begins at 8:00 am with the 5K Trail Run at 8:30 am. There is a Sleep-In Participant options for those that want to support the cause and get a T-Shirt with Mother Neff State Park on the Front. Awards given to top three finishers in 11 divisions. For more information, cost of event, and registration form, contact Robert White at rwhite@mcgregor-isd.org. Entry includes admission to the park, so plan to make a day of it. Pack a picnic lunch, enjoy the trails, do some fishing, attend the Earth Day Chautauqua Time at 2:00, and so much more. Mother Neff State Park is located at 1680 Texas 236 Hwy, Moody TX 76557. Celebrate Earth Day at Mother Neff State Park. Learn how to leave a legacy instead of a trace through a variety of games and activities led by a park ranger. Guided activities are 10-12 and 2-4 rain or shine so come prepared with comfortable shoes and other gear. Self guided activities from 7 to 10 pm. Call (254) 853-2389 for more information.

Bring your mother and come learn why Pat Neff called his Mother “the noblest and best woman” in an exhibit about Isabella Neff who bequeathed a part of her homestead as a park, now called Mother Neff State Park. After viewing the exhibit, hike the trails, see the wildflowers, fish the Leon River, or just sit back and relax with a picnic lunch. Call (254)853-2389 for more information. Exhibit available from 9 to 4, and the park is open 7 to 10 pm for day activities.

Largest Trailgating Party

Mother Neff State Park is celebrating the American Hiking Society’s National Trail Day from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This year’s theme is “Largest Trailgating Party”. Participate in Face Painting, Native American Games, Pioneer Toys, and more as you hike the trail at the park. Mother Neff State Park is located at 1680 Texas 236 Hwy, Moody TX 76557. In honor of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 236 years ago, we are looking for all things red, white, and blue at Mother Neff State Park. Beginning at 2:00 for an hour, rain or shine, so come prepared with comfortable shoes and other gear. Call 254/853-2389 for more information. 1st Day Hike

Join Park Ranger Marianne Van Houtte on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2013 for a hike at Mother Neff State Park. Fresh air and beautiful surrounding contribute to your emotional health and play a part in reducing stress on the body. Beginning at 2:00 pm, she will guide you on the trails and explain the benefits of walking to your health.

The trails are conducive for running or jogging, as well as hiking. As a Boston Marathon finisher, Marianne can provide you with tips for a fun run. Hiking with a bandana is one safety tip and Marianne will cover all of the ways it can be useful. First 10 participants will receive a free bandana.

TPWD 50th Anniversary Hike

This is the 50th Anniversary of Texas Parks and Wildlife and we are celebrating on National Trails Day with a self guided hike. Beginning at the entrance to the park, view an exhibit about the early days of camping, fishing, and hunting. As you hike to the cave, another exhibit brings you forward in time; then finishes up with pictures of the present at the washpond. The hike is approximately 2.5 miles round trip and can be done in a fast or leisurely pace. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes.

RWB Hike

Join a park ranger on Independence Day for a hike as we hunt for RWB. In honor of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 237 years ago, we are looking for all things red, white, and blue at Mother Neff State Park. The hike begins at the prairie trailhead and descends through the tree shaded canyon to the cave. From the cave, the hike continues to the washpond and back to the prairie trailhead. Interspersed with looking for all things red, white, and blue, a discussion of the history of Independence Day occurs.
