First Day Hikes

Visitors can enjoy a nature hike focused on the native plant and animal species that inhabit the park. Hike is approximately an hour long and distance will vary depending on participation. Surface will be trails and some uneven surfaces. Participants will want to wear sturdy shoes, bring a hiking stick and drinking water. Meet at Lost Pines Nature Trail/Amphitheater.

Hike is approx. an hour long, and distance will vary depending on participation. Surface will be trails over uneven ground, so participants will want to wear sturdy shoes and bring a hiking stick and drinking water. Meet at Johnson Branch Amphitheater.

Angler Education Instructor Workshop

This free workshop is open to anyone 18 or older interested in becoming a Certified TPWD Volunteer to teach the basics of fishing in their communities. The program provides the curriculum, equipment, materials and support to help volunteers successfully introduce youth and their families to fishing. Ideal for teachers, youth group leaders, park and camp staff. Participants should wear comfortable clothing for indoor and outdoor activities, and bring a water bottle. Lunch will not be provided. Held at Ray Roberts Lake State Park, Johnson Branch Unit in the Maintenance Bldg. Pre-registration required. See contact information below. Class limited to 30 participants.

Go Fish! Learn-to-Fish Event

Families can learn the basics of fishing through fun, hands-on activities. Take away a fishing fun pack and enter the drawing for door prizes. Equipment and bait provided or bring your own. No license necessary. Adults must accompany children. Bring sun protection and water.

Campfire Program

Meet at the Lost Pines amphitheater. Learn about some of the creatures that lurk at night! Campfire programs may include demonstrations such as fire making (conditions permitting) dutch oven cooking and more. Contact the site for up to date details. Night Sounds Campfire Program

Take the fright out of the night by putting a name to the sounds we hear when camping. This event is open to the public, all are welcome; participants are welcome to bring food to roast over the campfire. This event is free to park visitors who pay entrance fees for access to the park ($7 for adults and children 12 and older; free with Texas Park Pass); no reservations are required. The program will take place at the amphitheater near the kid’s fishing pond; the park is located at 100 PW 4153, Valley View, TX 76272; this program is accessible for the mobility and hearing impaired.

Spring Egg Hunt

An interpretive geocaching event where kids will have the opportunity to learn to use handheld GPS receivers, then borrow one to find caches of eggs around the Kid’s Fishing Pond at the park. The caches will contain information about different egg-laying animals in the park, kids who find all the caches will receive a prize! Held at Ray Roberts Lake State Park – Johnson Branch Unit, 100 PW 4153, Valley View, TX 76272; please dress for the weather and bring drinking water; this event is accessible for the mobility and hearing impaired. There is no fee for the event, only park entrance fees ($7/person over 12 years of age or free with Texas Park Pass) are required. Kids of all ages are welcome with parent supervision; no reservations necessary.
