Enjoy a two-mile, guided, walking tour as it descends into a limestone canyon where you will view 4,000-year-old Pecos River Style Pictographs, among the oldest, most colorful, complex and distinctive ancient paintings in all of the Americas; hike lasts for approx. 1½ hours. Special requirements or caveats: mildly strenuous, requires hiking over steep steps; may want to bring hiking stick, water and sturdy hiking shoes. Meet at park headquarters. Weather permitting.

Presa Canyon Pictograph Tour

This tour includes hiking in the lower canyons, in a closed area of the park to view rock art sites. A perfect opportunity to photograph some of North America’s oldest known rock art. This is a seven mile hike and approximate time is eight hours. Due to rough terrain this hike is rated as extremely strenuous. Hikers should be experienced. No pets and children under the age of 12 allowed. Cash, check or money order only-no credit cards.

Upper Seminole Canyon Tour

This tour includes hiking in the upper canyon of Seminole Canyon, in a closed area of this park. View a combination of Red Linear and Lower Pecos rock art sites, original 1882 Southern Pacific railroad sites and camp area of the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts. This is a 2 mile hike and approximate time is four hours. Due to the rough terrain this is rated as a strenuous hike. No pets or children under the age of 12 allowed (ages 12-17 must be accompanied by parent/guardian). *check or cash only

5th Annual Archeolympics

Step back into pre-history and compete in this special event. This is considered a primitive skills competition and is open to all and is focused on having fun and learning about ancient life ways. Try your hand in the atlatl spear throwing and rabbit stick throw competitions and the friction fire starting race. Demonstrations and displays of prehistoric technologies will be available for all to see. Call the Park for rules and regulations.

Presa Canyon Camp Overnight

This is a rare opportunity to camp overnight within Presa Canyon-normally closed to the public. This two day guided hike takes the participants into backcountry to view Red Linear Style and Lower Pecos Style rockart. Limited to minimum of four and maximum of twelve participants and must be in excellent health, have knowledge and skills in backcountry camping. Participants must provide their own hike/camp gear and food/water, limited weight of gear is 80lbs per person. Park will only supply firewood (warming fire only), shuttling of participants’ gear, earth friendly-latrine and experienced guides. Personal gear will be shuttled to and from camp area by Park Staff and picked up by Park Staff the following day. The second day participants are to be back at Headquarters Building by 4:30pm. Ages 15-17 must be accompanied by adult/guardian. No children under the age of 15 and no pets. Registration opens for this event on January 27, 2012. $50 per person.
