First Day Hikes

Come for a ¾-mile hike on the park’s Pond Loop Trail and see the new John Jacob Observation Tower and other park features. The Pond Loop will illustrate to visitors the impact of recent rains and the Tower will allow them to see both the developing prairie and lake. Pets are permitted on a 6-foot leash. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and dress for the weather. Hikers meet in front of Acorn Annex.

Third Saturday Bird Walk

Every third Saturday. Come out to Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center and see the resident birds throughout the park. Meet in front of the Acorn Annex and dress for the weather wearing comfortable close toed shoes. Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. Held weather permitting. Green the Prairie

Spend the morning helping the park restore former farmland to native coastal prairie. We need volunteers to help plant 3,000 prairie grasses and forbs. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy hiking or rubber boots. Bring a water bottle and work gloves if you have them. No experience necessary and all equipment will be provided. Mentors will be in the field to assist in planting, and answer any questions. Bring water and pack a picnic lunch to enjoy after the hard work in the prairie. Reservations required.

Annual Youth Fishing Derby

Come out and celebrate National Fishing Day. Kids ages 2-15 bring your parents, some sunscreen and grab your fishing gear to try your hand in the tournament. Bait will be provided and prizes will be awarded. This is a free event held at Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center, 15315 Beaumont Highway, Houston, TX 77049. Geocaching 101 - (Houston Area)

Come out to Sheldon Lake State Park and learn the basics of a fast growing sport that is loved by kids and adults alike. Geocaching uses GPS technology to help you find items hidden throughout the park. All necessary equipment will be provided while you discover a game that can be played almost anywhere. Take the skills home with you and join in on the fun using a Smartphone Application or your own handheld GPS. Live a happier and healthier lifestyle by getting outside and venturing down the beautiful trails that our state parks have to offer.

No reservations are necessary. The event is free to the public and there is no park entrance fee.

All ages are welcome to attend; However, children under 13 must have an parent or guardian with them.

Meet at the covered patio at the pond center.

Bring water, a Smartphone/GPS if available, insect repellent and we recommend wearing closed shoes

Prairie Restoration

Join volunteers every Tuesday morning to help with the ongoing restoration of 300 acres of tallgrass prairie. Activities include separating and potting rescued grasses, potting seedlings for grow out, planting mature grasses and collecting seed. No training necessary. Must be 14 yrs or older. Wetland Restoration

Join the “Wetlands Team” every Wednesday to help with the ongoing restoration of shallow wetlands adjacent to the coastal tallgrass prairie. Volunteers help dig or separate rescued wetland plants and replant them in the wetlands being restored. No training necessary. Must be 14 yrs or older. Weekend Guided Nature Walk

Enjoy a one-hour guided walk led by one of the Park Naturalists. The 1/2-mile walk could include wildlife and habitat identification to learn about the native flora and fauna, and is driven by the group's interest. Anyone can join in the fun. Group size limited to 20. Walks are weather permitting so dress appropriately with sturdy closed toed shoes. Native Prairie Plant-a-thon

Volunteers are needed to plant 2,500 native coastal prairie grasses and forbs. This event will help the park continue the restoration of 400 acres from farmland to native prairie habitat and reestablish the diverse wildlife that it once had. Restoring this prairie will enhance the educational programs at the Learning Center that is visited by thousands of children and adults every year. Volunteers should be at least 14-years-old and capable of digging and planting, but all family groups are welcome. Holiday in the Park
