Dates Open:

The WMA is open for fishing and other recreational activities from September 1 to October 31 and February 1 through August 31. The WMA is closed to fishing and other recreational activities November 1 through January 31 except for waterfowl hunting each day during the Early Teal Season and of the South Zone Duck Season as established for Orange County. General Access

Old River Unit

The Old River Unit is divided by SH 87/73 into the west and east sides. On the east side, Lake St. extends from Bridge City south to Sabine Lake. Boat ramps are located at the end of Lake St. and Sabine Lake on the east side and on the west side on Hwy 87/73 where it crosses a canal leading to Sabine Lake. The use of airboats and horses are prohibited. The Old River Unit is open year-round to permitted consumptive and non-consumptive users.

Nelda Stark Unit

Bessie Heights Road is the only way into the unit. The entrance to the Nelda Stark Unit is about one mile down Bessie Heights Road on the left. Parking is available about 0.2 mile from Bessie Heights Road. Access to the hunting area is restricted to non-motorized boats during the waterfowl seasons. Canoes and pirogues (dugouts) are recommended. Airboats are restricted to non-vegetated areas only. The use of horses and ATV's are prohibited.

NOTE:

Access to the hunting area is by foot only and requires up to one-half mile walk on improved trail.

Area Closure Information:

On designated hunt days, the hunting area is open only to permitted hunters. The remainder of the Nelda Stark Unit is open year round to permitted users.

Permits Required

Visitors 17 years of age or older must possess an Annual Public Hunting Permit (APH) or Limited Public Use Permit (LPU).
