Carl P. Covert, Sr. – Obituary and Assessment Call

Carl P. Covert, SrCarl P. Covert, Sr., 77, of Cedar Creek passed away on August 2, 2011 after a lengthy bout with pneumonia following open heart surgery last December. He was born January 11, 1934 in Houston, Texas to Carl Lucas and Margret Covert. Carl and his wife Vivian were married for almost 54 years. Carl is survived by his wife Vivian of Cedar Creek, son Price Covert of Cedar Creek, Texas, son Phillip Covert of Austin, Texas, son Payton Covert and wife Kris and grandson William Payton Covert of Paris, Texas, one brother, a sister-in-law and two nephews.

Carl served the Texas Game and Fish Commission and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for 39 years. He began his career in law enforcement as a probationary game warden in 1956 near Liberty, where he worked on ranches, including Governor Price Daniel’s ranch. In February 1957, he became a cadet in the 10th Annual Texas Game and Fish Commission Game Warden Training Academy. Upon graduation from the Academy on May 28, 1957, his first game warden duty station was in Milam County with additional patrol duties in Burleson and Lee counties. Carl elevated through the various ranks of game warden, and he eventually promoted to Director of Field Operations in Austin in 1992. He held that position until his retirement on August 31, 1995.

Carl liked the outdoors and especially liked to fish in Colorado. He loved to get together with his friends and family and crank up the bar-b-q and do what he laughingly called “burn a chicken.”

Carl joined the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Mutual Association, formerly the Texas Game and Fish Commission Mutual Association, on February 15, 1951. Memorial donations may be made in his name to: the Texas Park and Wildlife Mutual Association, P.O. Box 549, Del Valle, Texas 78617; or Operation Game Thief, 4200 Smith School Road, Austin, Texas 78744. At Carl’s request, no funeral service is planned. Condolences may be mailed to Mrs. Carl Covert, 571 Union Chapel Road, Cedar Creek, TX 78612.
