David Henry Heard - Obituary and Assessment Call

David Henry Heard

PORT LAVACA - David Henry Heard, 47, of Port Lavaca died on Saturday, March 3, 2007 after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. David was born in San Marcos on August 16, 1960, the son of I.H. and Lena Burleson Heard. He attended public schools and was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church in Bloomington. At Bloomington High School, David received a varsity letter as a member of the Fighting Bobcats football team (#76) and was named an All District Down Lineman. As a member of the speech team he was honored with a first place in group interpretive speaking and was a member of the Green Dragons.

Always the team player, David served as the secretary of Future Farmers of America (FFA) and was named Best Sportsman for the class of '78. It was during this time that David developed a lifelong love of the outdoors. After graduation David attended Victoria Junior College in preparation for his admission to the Texas Game Warden Academy on January 2, 1982.

David began his career upon graduation from the Texas Game Warden Academy and received his commission as a state peace officer. He was assigned to the Calhoun County area. David quickly gained the reputation as an honorable officer who could be trusted by his brother game wardens. In 2004 he was named CCA Game Warden of the Year - Region IV. In 2005, when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the coastal United States, David assisted the citizens of Louisiana and Texas. In typical David style he humbly tackled difficult search-and-rescue missions because they needed to be done.

David was an honorary chapter member of the Calhoun FFA and was recognized by the Texas Senate and House of Representatives for his work in conjunction with Hurricane Katrina. David married the former Kathy Robinson of Edna. This otherwise humble man was extremely proud of the fact that he had two outstanding daughters, Amber Renae Heard, a student at Texas A & M Corpus Christi, and Kaitlyn Faye who attends Travis Junior High School. David leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife, Kathy; two loving children, Amber and Kaitlyn; mother, Lena Burleson Heard; two sisters, Susan Heard (Henry) Holloman of Bloomington and Lisa Heard (Brian) Clark of Leesburg, Va.; one brother, Calvin Anderle and wife Sharon of Port Lavaca; one nephew, Jason Holloman of Midland; and two nieces, Brianna Clark of Waco and Lena Clark of Leesburg, Va.

He was preceded in death by his father, I.H. Heard Jr., in 2004. Viewing will begin today at 8 a.m., and visitation with the family from 6-8 p.m., at Grace Funeral Home, Victoria. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bauer Community Center in Port Lavaca. Burial will immediately follow at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery in Port Lavaca. Pallbearers are Robert Dominguez, Mack Chambers, Kevin Stancik, Felton White, Jess Malone, Mike Shaw, Kenneth Burleson and Calvin Anderle. Honorary pallbearers are Joe Bonuz, James Maikoetter, Randy Teague and all Parks & Wildlife Department officers. Grace Funeral Home, 361-573-4341, Victoria.
