Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife Viewing Permitted

Viewing wildlife is an enjoyable activity that is available in many of the Wildlife Management Areas of Texas.

A designated wildlife viewing area on the Old River Unit has migratory waterfowl, shorebirds and other nesting land birds feeding in the vicinity of the observation platform. Visitors also can expect to see Monarch butterflies, muskrats, mink, otters, raccoons and alligators. Continue past the viewing area to Sabine Lake where herons, egrets, spoonbills, waterfowl and shorebirds gather, so be sure to bring a scope.

The Nelda Stark Unit has two islands as well as the trail, part of which is a boardwalk. Preserved as a wildlife sanctuary, the Nelda Stark Unit has a small area used for Special hunts, but most of the unit is not used for hunting. The wildlife thrives in these conditions which provide protection, food and water.

This Wildlife Management Area is one of many wildlife viewing sites along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail — see more information, on the Texas Parks and Wildlife — Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail interactive map.
