Frequently Asked Questions

White-tailed Deer

I saw a white deer. Are albinos common?

Assuming that you saw a white-tailed deer and not a white fallow deer, you saw an albino. Albinos are uncommon, but we get a few reports almost every year from hunters who killed white whitetails. Melanistic deer (black deer) and piebald (two-toned deer) are also reported. Color aberrations are caused by genetic factors. Sometimes deer with color anomalies may be small, deformed, or have poor antlers. Unusually colored deer are often restricted to small portions of counties, but may crop up anywhere in the state.
