Back from the Brink

QUITAQUE, Texas – The official Texas State Bison herd—the last remaining remnant of wild Southern Plains Bison—took center stage during Day 2 of Bison Celebration Days at Caprock Canyons State Park. Park staff and volunteers also promoted interpretive activities, and displays of 19^th-Century life on the prairie, as well as offering tours and photo opportunities of the free-roaming bison.

These magnificent animals represent the only pure strain of the original Charles Goodnight herd, dating back to the 1870s. Once numbering in the millions of animals, these icons of the plains were hunted to near extinction, but—like most all subspecies of American Bison—are making a comeback. Currently, there are some 95 bison at Caprock Canyons State Park, viewable to the visiting public.

Restoration of the bison herd is a major phase of returning the Panhandle prairie ecosystem at the park back to its original state, dating back to before European settlement of the mid-to-late 1800s.
