Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission Authorizes New Yoakum Dunes Wildlife Management Area in Panhandle

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission today approved acceptance of a land donation to create the new 14,037-Acre Yoakum Dunes Wildlife Management Area in Cochran, Terry and Yoakum Counties near Lubbock, providing a refuge for the threatened lesser prairie chicken and other native grassland birds and wildlife. It’s the first new WMA in Texas since the 2006 donation of the McGillivray and Leona McKie Muse Wildlife Management Area in Brown County.

FORT DAVIS – The public is invited to a 3 p.m. ribbon-cutting for a newly constructed bird blind at Davis Mountains State Park on Friday, Nov. 14 being dedicated to the Francell family, which has played a major role in Texas land conservation efforts.

Outlook Improved for Quail Season

AUSTIN – Much-needed rainfall at the right times this year are helping to bolster bobwhite quail numbers and should lead to improved hunting compared to last season, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists.

$4 Million Awarded for Texas Quail Restoration in Focus Areas

As bird hunters look to quail season opening Oct. 25 across Texas, there is new hope for bobwhite quail, and for dozens of other birds and animals that share the same native grassland habitat. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has awarded grants to put $4 million worth of quail habitat conservation on the ground, using a special appropriation by the Texas Legislature to help bring back the quail.

AUSTIN — New licenses for the 2014-15 hunting and fishing seasons go on sale Friday, August 15. The current year Texas hunting and fishing licenses (except year-to-date fishing licenses) will expire Aug. 31.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Applauds “Land Stewardship: Providing Water for Texans” Week April 27-May 4

AUSTIN – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has partnered with the Association of Texas Soil & Water Conservation Districts (ATSWCD), Texas Wildlife Association, and Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board to highlight the important connection between voluntary land stewardship and sustaining water availability. The statewide campaign, “Land Stewardship: Providing Water for Texans,” is the theme of this year’s Soil & Water Stewardship Week, which is held April 27-May 4.
