ATHENS—The season’s first stocking of rainbow trout into the ponds and streams at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) will take place December 1.

The trout may be fished for without a fishing license at TFFC, and all equipment and bait are furnished. Anglers may provide their own tackle, but only single hooks with barbs mashed down are allowed.

While the trout will take canned corn, worms or a variety of flies, the bait that looks the most like the food they are accustomed to eating is Berkeley PowerBait Hatchery Formula Trout Nuggets.

Anglers at TFFC may harvest up to five rainbow trout for payment of a $5 fee. The fee must be paid at admission and before fishing.

The trout season will run until April 2011. About 5,000 rainbow trout will be stocked at TFFC during that time. For locations and dates of trout stockings statewide, visit http://tpwd.texas.gov/troutstocking.

TFFC is located at 5550 F.M. 2495, four miles east of Athens. Admission is $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, and $3.50 for children ages 4–12. For more information and directions, call (903) 676-2277 or visit http://tpwd.texas.gov/tffc.
