“Fishing Fools Day” Kicks Off April at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is welcoming in the month of April with its annual “Fishing Fools Day” on Saturday, April 1. The event is designed to celebrate all things fishing, with activities scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mother Neff State Park Receives Lone Star Legacy Designation

WACO— Mother Neff State Park in Waco received the Lone Star Legacy Park designation by the Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS) at a ceremony at their annual institute in Frisco on March 2. Mother Neff State Park was the only state park to receive the award from seven parks nominated this year.

TPWD Program Celebrates State Park Centennial With $2.9 Million in Grant Awards

AUSTIN – In honor of the State Park Centennial Celebration, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Community Outdoor Outreach Program (CO-OP) has awarded the largest sum of grant funding in the program’s history and support a record-breaking number of organizations connecting under-represented audiences to Texas State Parks.

2023 Bird City Texas Recipients Announced

AUSTIN – Audubon Texas and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) are excited to announce Austin and Cedar Hill as the newest additions to the Bird City Texas flock. This certification program recognizes cities efforts to ensure birds, wildlife and people thrive in their communities. Austin and Cedar Hill have displayed leadership as Bird Friendly Cities by excelling in three criteria areas: community engagement, habitat enhancement and protection and creating safer spaces for birds. Their Bird City Texas certification will continue through 2026.

Lake Corpus Christi State Park to Host 31st Annual Kid Fish Event

MATHIS –Park rangers at Lake Corpus Christi State Park are hosting the 31st annual Kid Fish 2023 on Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Young anglers can learn how to fish, enjoy the wonders of outdoor recreation and be a part of the Texas State Parks 100 Years Celebration.

TPWD Unveils Virtual Reality Boater App at Houston Boat and Car Show

HOUSTON – The latest classroom for boating education is virtual reality. In a nationwide first, the TPWD boater education program will utilize VR headsets to introduce audiences to the joy of sailing where wind, waves and actions all impact the boat’s behavior. While immersed in a highly realistic environment, participants will learn about different types of sailboats, parts of the boat and steering basics. The virtual reality sailing course is part of the MarineVerse app, one of the online training courses offered by Nautic Ed.

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is celebrating 50 years of hunter education in Texas and officially recognized Austin Zurek of Midlothian as the 1.5 millionth student during Thursday’s Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) Commission meeting.

“Veterans Day at the TFFC” Slated for Nov. 12

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is excited to announce the second annual “Veterans Day at the TFFC” event to honor and support veterans. The event is scheduled for Nov. 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with free admission for veterans and their families.

“Ethelsgiving” Headed to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in November

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is teaming up with the Henderson County Food Pantry this November for the “Ethelsgiving Feed the Hungry, Feed the Fish” food drive. The annual tradition began in 2020 to honor the first ShareLunker “Ethel,” which weighed 17.67-pounds and was caught Nov. 26, 1986. This year’s drive begins on Nov. 1 and runs throughout the month at the Athens facility.
